The step by step information in this book changed my life. Even as a faithful Christian and successful business owner, I had a significant problem with anger. My wife, family and friends and have seen a dramatic change. This powerful book addresses the negative self talk that almost all people have. More importantly it gives biblical instruction on how to stop it and the destruction that it causes.

To improve the quality of your life improve your thought life. The truth sets you free from depression, guilty, confusion, and anxiety. This book shows you how to replace self-defeating thoughts with healthy thoughts that build you up. It is based on principles from the Bible.
We're told early in the book, "you'll believe what you tell yourself" (p. 18). Consequently it is important not to be decieved. Self-deception can hold a person back from living the abundant life Jesus sacrificed to give us.
In laying the background for the rest of the book, he tells us on page 21:
"In emotional and mental health, what you believe is all important. It makes a difference what you believe. Other people, circumstances, events and material things are not what make you happy. What you believe about these things is what makes you happy or unhappy."
Actions grow out of beliefs. You will behave, based on what you believe. In fact, the chemicals in the physcial brain are affected by the thoughts one thinks.
Chapter 3 does a masterful job of explaining how negative thoughts are deceptive. In the chapter's summary, he writes, "Remember, any thoughts that reflect hopelessness, desperation, hate, fear, bitterness, jealousy, or envy are the words and thoughts generated by demonic falsehood" (p. 35).
Chapter 5 contains a nugget on effective prayer, "Instead of praying the problem, pray the answer" (p. 61).
The book takes a negativity and exaimes how it is a deception. For example, anger or fear. As a person realizes the truth, the negative is replaced with the positive.
Read this book and grow healthy mentally.

Backus' book is an excellent read for knowing how to properly handle our thoughts and reactions to others.

Among the points Backus covers include:

1. We do not have to strive for the approval of others.
2. When beliefs change, behavior will change.
3. Truths about anger and pleasing others.
4. We are not victims, we can make choices!
5. Be careful of manipulation.
6. Misbeliefs and truths about being indispensible.
7. Truths about taking chances.
8. Unlearning old thinking.

Bakcus accurately states that much of what happens to us results from the way we think.

Read and be encouraged to change your inappropriate thoughts!

I have been reading my doctors copy of SOS Help for Emotions. My wife is bi-polar and my son has Schizophrenia. This book has helped me to understand the self talk that we do to ourselves over a problem we face. Problems present themselves all the time, it is the self talk that we do that causes most of the problems with the solution. This book has helped me with both my wife and son's sickness because I can help them analize and improve thier self talk section of a problem to end with a more positive out look or one that is not as detrimental as they make it. What we think most of the times causes a problem to get worse than it should be, when we understand the problem and think it through in a positive way the out come of the problem is way less then what it could have been. I am not a doctor or psycologist, I'm just a family member that cares deeply for my family and want to make thier life less stressfull as I can.

For once, I have chosen a book based on other people's reviews, and I am very pleased with that decision. At the time I purchased it, I was going through a horrible break up that I was so depressed over, and always thinking the worst things "It's all my fault" "if only I was a better girlfriend" - well, after reading the book, I brought my emotions in order, and realized 'it wasn't me - I am not the one with the problem'. This is a light-hearted book, written in language that most normal people can understand, and doesn't make you feel like you are reading a college-level psychology textbook. The first 30 pages will make a difference, a notable difference, and you will start to feel better......I did.

This is one of the best books I have read on depression - and I've read a boatload. Keeping in mind that different people respond to information in different ways, choose this book if you like reading facts, statistics, scientific studies and their application to depression (don't let that description lead you to believe the book is dry or dull, just that this is not a wishy-washy book filled with reader testimonies or inspiring images). I especially enjoyed his meta-analysis of multiple studies which he used to illustrate many different aspects of the relationship between depression and exercise, and also his discussion of diet and weightloss in a depression context. Whilst his tone is factual and serious (with everything referenced and clearly backed up), everything is still well explained for the layperson (such as myself). I highly reccommend this book.

Very Helpful Book, June 26, 2005

The reviewer below, C Fink, wrote a great review of this book, but I have one comment to add: although the author is a runner and some of the studies he cites are based on runners, the author states clearly that any aerobic exercise is fine. I'm not a runner and as I was reading, I didn't think of it as a running book (I prefer bicycling and hiking/walking).

I've read quite a few books on depression and anxiety. Although many of them helped me to learn and understand, this book was the most practical/pragmatic. Move your body, breathe hard, you'll feel better. (As the author states, one may also need therapy and medication.)

I feel like giving this book to people living with depression and/or anxiety. It could make a huge difference.
